Vault gallery curators Myrtille Couten and Ben Hill present an exhibition of their own work in response to common concerns in their work.
The exhibition at the Church Street space marks the last in a series of nine consecutive monthly exhibitions, before the summer season which will see a break from regular programming. As artists and curators, Couten and Hill attempt to reveal the poetic in the ‘everyday’- principally in resurrecting those objects and experiences most typically discarded, disregarded and disused in modern cultures; ‘rescuing the mundane from the boring’. Their venture is concerned with the ways in which humankind interacts with objects, and how these objects, in turn, assume the properties and narratives of their respective histories. Hill comments that ‘our own artistic practices often share theme or reason. Tying these motivations in with our working knowledge of the space has thrown up some interesting questions for us’. Their practice is one which typically utilizes paradox and dry humour, cast into sculptural installations; whilst their attentive gaze for common materials ultimately admits and promotes the potential for artistic and poetic experience above and beyond the gallery space. The Exhibition runs from the 12th-27th June 2009, with a preview taking place Thursday 11th June 2009, 6:30-9:30pm. Myrtille Couten and Ben Hill are UK-Based artists, founders of the VAULT gallery and recent graduates in Fine Art from the University of Cumbria. | |||||||
