Are we free or are we captive? What do we value? What is valuable?

These are just some of the questions being asked by UK artist Greig Burgoyne as he juxtaposes found images and scavenged styles to create a standoff between self imposed captivity and misplaced notions of security.

Taking the form of a wall drawing and installation, it is intended to be read both from the outside looking in and the inside looking out. It spreads erratically across the walls of the VAULT Gallery like shattering glass; in other areas -images seem stuck in some invisible psychological and indecisive gunk. Burgoyne seeks to evoke a world at odds with its inhabitants either marooned between ideals of duty, conformity, security and order or alternatively drifting in an exhilarating potentiality of disintegration, displacement and fragmentation.

From the empty container placed in the safe to the shifting energies of the wall drawing, Burgoyne brings conflicting social/ psychological predicaments into close confinement. The work expresses both the tension of containment in the gallery space and equally it evokes an abstract sense of liberation. The drawing proffers no answers as to what we are contained by or what that liberation may imply.

As Burgoyne says ‘it’s like a genie released from the bottle with no need to return - however having embraced conformity and routine for so long, when given the opportunity of the empty liberation to join in contemporary societies desires, the genie can only bear witness to its exciting potentiality and impermanence; like the high street one has descended from to reach this cave, only to see the dilemmas of the upper- world emblazoned on the walls.

The exhibition opens on the 7th May and runs until the 23rd May.

Greig Burgoyne is a UK based artist and is also Pathway leader BA Fine Art/ University for the Creative Arts at Farnham UK
